Milling Stainless Steel Part
The process of our custom CNC machining service involves leveraging the predominant subtractive
manufacturing technology of CNC machining.
This method is particularly effective in crafting bespoke metal and plastic parts for both prototyping
and production needs. Through the utilization of CAD modeling software and G-code, CNC milling
and CNC turning machines meticulously remove material from solid workpieces with precision and
efficiency.
Our service excels in delivering sturdy components with stringent tolerances and diverse material
properties, both mechanical and chemical. Its applicability extends seamlessly to one-off projects
and low-to-medium volume production, facilitated by automation and high repeatability.
Product Details
Materials for CNC machining are typically classified into three major categories: plastics,
soft metals, and hard metals. Examples encompass aluminum, bronze, copper, ceramics,
plywood, steel, stone, wood, zinc, and various others.
Materials characterized by ease of manipulation and favorable properties are commonly
preferred over alternative options.
Common Materials for CNC Machining
Material | Properties |
Aluminum | 2024: Good fatigue resistance and strength; excellent toughness at moderate to high strength levels; improved fracture toughness |
6061: Excellent machinability, low cost, and versatility
7075: High strength, hardness, low weight, and heat tolerance
Stainless Steel | Excellent machinability and outstanding uniformity; good workability and weldability, high ductility and formability |
Steel Alloy | Mix of chromium, molybdenum, and manganese yields toughness, good torsional and fatigue strength |
Brass | Versatile and highly attractive copper/zinc alloy with warm yellow color accommodates severe forming/drawing |
Titanium | Excellent strength to weight ratio, used in aerospace, automotive, and medical industries |
Copper | High ductility and high electrical and thermal conductivity; develops attractive blue-green surface patina over time |
ABS | Excellent impact resistance, good mechanical properties, susceptible to solvents |
PEEK | High-performance thermoplastic, very high strength, thermal and chemical resistant |
POM | High stiffness, excellent thermal & electrical properties, relatively brittle |
CNC Machining Tolerances
Tolerances are not standardized across all processes and materials.
The final tolerances on your part depend on various factors, such as part size, design complexity,
the number and size of features, materials used, surface finish, and the manufacturing process
employed.
Once your order is confirmed, we conduct a Design for Manufacturing review to identify areas that
may need modification for better manufacturability.
It's helpful if you can specify which areas in your design have critical tolerances that must be met
and which can be adjusted, if necessary, to optimize production time and cost.
CNC Milling Tolerances
Limits for nominal size | Plastics | Metals |
0.5mm* to 3mm | ±0.1mm | ±0.05mm |
Over 3mm to 6mm | ±0.1mm | ±0.05mm |
Over 6mm to 30mm | ±0.2mm | ±0.10mm |
Over 30mm to 120mm | ±0.3mm | ±0.15mm |
Over 120mm to 400mm | ±0.5mm | ±0.20mm |
Over 400mm to 1000mm | ±0.8mm | ±0.30mm |
Over 1000mm to 2000mm | ±1.2mm | ±0.50mm |
Over 2000mm to 4000mm | ±2.0mm
*Please clearly indicate tolerances for nominal sizes, below 0.5mm on your technical drawing. |
Common Applications of CNC Milling Parts
CNC milling stands as a cornerstone in manufacturing, offering efficiency, precision, and the
elimination of manual labor. Machine shops play a critical role in providing essential services for
prototypes and full production runs.
The electronics industry heavily relies on CNC machines to manufacture components like electronic
enclosures and circuit supports. In the commercial sector, CNC cutting heads contribute to the
cost-effective production of various parts, aiding companies in reducing production costs and saving
time.
The oil and gas industry utilizes CNC machines extensively for the production of components such
as drill bits, cylinders, pins, rods, and valves. The medical industry benefits from CNC milling in
creating a wide range of components, from implants to medical devices.
The aerospace industry, with its constant need for precision, embraces CNC machined parts for
crafting complex and customized components integral to aerospace equipment.

FAQ's
1. What cosmetic standards do you guarantee?
Our commitment to quality includes standard deburring and edge-breaking procedures for all CNC
machined parts. Any critical edges requiring a sharp finish must be explicitly indicated in technical
drawings. Surfaces are guaranteed to be free of defects such as scratches, dents, stains, blemishes,
hanging marks, and minor imperfections.
Critical surfaces (primary (a) side, as specified in technical drawings) will be void of mill steps and
other marks. For the secondary (b) side, minor hanging marks and up to 2 minor defects are
deemed acceptable. To enhance surface roughness, visual properties, and wear resistance,
various post-processing and finishing methods can be applied to CNC machined parts.
2. How long does delivery time and quotation take?
The delivery time for parts is determined by their complexity. Parts with low complexity typically
have a lead time of 2-3 days, while moderate complexity extends the lead time to 2-5 days.
High-complexity parts may require 5 to 15 days for delivery. Quoting time varies based on design
complexity, ranging from 1 business day (or faster) for simpler designs to 3+ business days for
more intricate ones. For an assessment and quote for your design, please feel free to reach out to
our team.
3. Do you offer Quick-Turn CNC Machining?
Absolutely! We provide rapid turnaround times for quick-turn parts, with many available in just
3-4 days. Additionally, we offer an expedite option, and our dedicated team collaborates closely
with you to meet your most urgent deadlines.
4. What type of surface finishes does provide?
We provide an extensive range of finishing services to achieve virtually any desired look and feel for
your parts. Our offerings include treatments for metal, texturing for plastic injection mold tools,
painting for both metal and plastic, and a variety of other options. Learn more about specifying the
surface texture you desire in our blog.
